Finally, Parenting Resources for Today's Families

Parenting, even in its finest moments, is hard work.  Each distinct stage of transition and growth a child experiences requires different parenting resources, new strategy and adjusted levels of guidance and intervention.  Many times on this parenting journey, parents are proud of their achievements.  Other times, even the most well-adjusted parents are at a complete loss.  It is during these times that parents need support the most – and until now, that support did not exist. Most parts of the country are full of parenting “recovery” programs.  Parent aids, parenting classes and counseling is at the forefront of efforts to help ineffective or abusive parents realize destructive parenting attitudes and techniques.  These programs aim to use persuasion, pressure and education to augment old attitudes and replace them with more effective techniques and strategies for managing a child.

Restorative efforts are necessary to prevent future harm to a child’s physical or emotional development but, sadly, by this time varying degrees of “damage” have been done.  Unacceptable behavior has grown more resistant to change and parents, armed with their new skills and hounded by expectations, attempt to integrate these in their life with varying levels of competence.  Many children are not able to live successfully in these homes and another family falls apart.

The currently existing myth is that only these families struggle - when the opposite is true.  Parenting challenges transcend social and racial boundaries, alive in well from the poorest downtown project house to the wealthiest suburban estate.  Many parents suffer in silence – plagued by feelings of inadequacy and guilt – having no confidential source for support.

Parents finally have a confidential resource to help shoulder the challenge of parenting.  The Institute provides in-home consultation by a Master’s level Family Consultant, 24/7 crisis support by phone, group classes which prepare parents for important transitions in their child’s life and more.  The Institute promotes a new way of parenting – proactively being prepared to parent each unique stage of child development.  This approach helps parents work actively with their child to develop a child’s self-control, emotional regulation and social skills.  Parents are better able to recognize the profound impact their parenting has on the future person their child will become.  Proactive parenting helps parents keep an eye on the future and parent in ways which help their child develop into an adult who is better able to remain resilient in the face of adversity. The Institute for Parenting and Family Development is proud to offer these services in-person or via phone so that families around the country can take advantage of these powerful resources.
